8th Theater Weekend in San Diego with Professor Murray Biggs

8th San Diego Theater Weekend with Professor Murray Biggs

Join popular Yale Professor Murray Biggs for his next winter theater weekend in San Diego on February 16-18, 2024. This program is designed not only for Yale alumni but for anyone else interested in high-quality theater around the country including family, friends and colleagues. Expected participation: about 35 people.

This weekend will be a 48-hour theatrical immersion starting at 3:30 pm on Friday, February 16, and ending after the Sunday matinee on Sunday, February 18. The program begins with around-the-room introductions and Professor Biggs’s preface to the Friday evening play, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, about the last days of Billie Holiday, at the enterprising Cygnet Theater in Old Town, 200 yards across the parking lot, after an included group dinner at our hotel. Saturday morning, 9:30-11:30 am, is given to a group review of that production followed by a lead-in to the evening performance of the Iranian-American Sanaz Toossi’s English, winner of both Obie Award and Pulitzer Prize, at the Old Globe Theatre. Sunday morning, 9:30-11:30 am, begins with a group review of that production followed by an introduction to our afternoon performance of Clyde’s, by Yale Drama School graduate, the prolific Lynn Nottage. This will be at the small and spirited Moxie Theatre, which is devoted to women playwrights.

The hotel will again be the Hacienda (Best Western Plus), a charmingly informal and spectacular sited “village” on the edge of Old Town with its Mexican cuisine.

The charge for the program is $1,150 per person for double occupancy and, to cover the full cost of the room, $1,375 for single. The cost for those not requiring hotel accommodation is $925 per person. These are total prices. (Theater tickets can be discounted for those with subscriptions to any of our theaters.) Included are:

  • Friday and Saturday night hotel accommodation as needed

  • Saturday and Sunday breakfast for hotel guests, and light refreshments at meetings

  • Friday dinner

  • scripts of the plays (with Holiday interviews instead) for individual preparation

  • three introductory presentations by Professor Biggs

  • best available seats at 3 performances

  • van service to and from theaters as needed

  • lively group discussion, seminar style
